Photoshop is built on layers. Each layer represents an underlying image or a transparent area. You can move, copy, paste, merge, delete, or create a new layer. This concept allows you to layer several different images and make adjustments to them all at one time. You also can use Photoshop’s powerful filtering tools to enhance an image — so it looks as if it was shot in a low-light environment or to increase contrast.
Who doesn’t love images? Photoshop is the big daddy of photographic editing programs. It allows you to change or enhance an image in a great number of ways. In addition to the toolbox, other features found in this book include layers, adjustment layers, selections, selections and channels, blend modes, healing tools, retouching, and more. If you haven’t used the program before, this book covers all the basics and shows you how to unleash your inner geek and to learn Photoshop the right way.
## Adding layers
To enhance an image, Photoshop is built on layers. Each layer represents a photograph, the background, a shadow, a layer mask, or any transparent area.
To add a layer in Photoshop, follow these steps:
**1.** **Select the Layer menu (see** **Figure** **3-1** **) and choose New Layer or press** Ctrl+N.
You’re presented with the New Layer dialog box, as shown in Figure 3-2.

**2.** **Highlight the desired location on the image.**
You can see that the Background layer has been highlighted on the left side of the New Layer dialog box. You can add new layers on a previous layer’s contents or on top of an existing layer.
You have the option to fill this layer with one of the image’s colors or with color from a graphics collection.
The color you select defines the color of the new layer. For example, if you select _White_, you see the white version of the layer. If you select a color from a graphics collection, the layer is named that color. For example, if you select _Red_, the layer is named Red.

What is Photoshop?
As a professional software designer, I have used Photoshop for more than 15 years. It was the first Mac software I worked on and I still use it every day in my work at Cezetc.com, a website that covers tech and entertainment.
The program has become an indispensable tool in my work. I’ve used Photoshop on my Mac computers and occasionally on Windows and Linux computers.
With the launch of Photoshop on the iPad, I have started using the program on iPad, also. If you are not familiar with Photoshop, start with the basics, which we will cover later in this article.
The product that I mostly use is the version Photoshop CS6, which I mainly use on Mac. In comparison, Photoshop Elements is less powerful and there are fewer tools. However, it is also the most cost-effective. There is also a limited version, Photoshop CC. This is a free version, which does not have some of the features of Photoshop, including advanced options. It is, however, suitable for amateur users and it has a lot of features, such as preset filters, special effects, and many other useful tools.
When I was developing my Mac app for Cezetc.com, I used Photoshop for many things, from creating the website’s image assets, to playing with the site’s settings and the content in the app. In the past, I was using Photoshop on Windows and Linux computers, which were much easier to use than my Mac, but I am now using Photoshop on my iPad as well. I use it every day, as part of my job, or as a hobby.
There are many ways to use Photoshop to edit images and make creative visual projects. The main tools are specific to certain tasks, but there are various plugins and open source tools that can be used as well.

You can create visual projects from basic to advanced, with elements like frames, compositing, text and illustrations. Elevated levels of hepatic enzyme markers were observed in rats following the oral administration of the pyrrolizidine alkaloids pyrrolizidine (PA; 95% 1-hydroxymethyl-3,6-didehydro-1H-pyrrolizine) and taytusine (PA; 98% 1-hydroxymethyl-6,7-dehydro-1H-pyrrolizine) to rats. However, treatment with 100 mg kg(-1) of T1N, 1,8-dihydroxymethyl-6,7-bis-O-methyl-3-oxo-3,4-dehydro-L-pyrrolizine or 3,4-dihydroxymethyl-6-O-methyl-1-hydroxymethyl-1,2,3-octaoxo-4,6-dihydro-L-pyrrolizine caused a dose-dependent increase in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity.
